Second City Salvage is offering today this lovely Victorian/Aesthetic Era piano window that was salvaged from a Chicago residence c1890. It’s design is so unique with beveled pieces intertwined with clear ripple, textured and amber stained glass with a crimson border and colorful faceted jewel accents. Leading is flat and tight although if you were to hang it unframed, I would suggest having a new zinc frame put on it. There are no cracks to be found. It measures 18 ¼”w x 14 ¼”h. A great find for your original Victorian home or new Victorian construction.
There’s a slight distinction to be made between transom windows, which sit atop doorways or larger windows, and piano windows. The latter are typically set off by themselves, and get their name because an upright piano, would have sat just beneath it. Pianos were so popular in late 19th and early 20c homes that a space was specifically designed, usually in the dining room, which would just fit an upright piano, and was frequently embellished with panels of stained glass.
