Second City Salvage is offering today this Craftsman or Arts & Crafts piano window that was salvaged from a Chicago residence facing demolition. It was original to the c1905 building. It’s a rare piece in excellent condition. It is made up mostly of opalescent creamy yellow glass with a textured and swirly amber glass border and some stained glass pieces mixed in to make up the rose pattern. All of the glass is original – there are no cracks to be found, however I had this piece restored because one piece had a large crack so was covered with a lead overlay. It measures 24″w x 20 1/2″h and the original frame is 1 3/4″ thick. Measurement for glass only is 19 1/2″w x 17 /2″h. Lead caming remains strong. There’s a slight distinction to be made between transom windows, which sit atop doorways or larger windows, and piano windows. The latter are typically set off by themselves, and get their name because an upright piano, would have sat just beneath it. Pianos were so popular in late 19th and early 20th century homes that a space was specifically designed, usually in the dining room, which would just fit an upright piano, and was frequently embellished with panels of stained glass. A great accent piece for your period home.
