Description

Interesting one-of-a-kind museum quality piece! This relief was removed in the summer of 2022 from a derelict building in north Minneapolis at 1011 Currie Ave. (since demolished). It most definitely defines the working man with the smokestacks, lumber, saw, hammer, paint cans and brushes, etc. We believe it dates to the 1930s and was probably done by an unknown commissioned FAP artist under the WPA. It is very similar to the relief on the Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum at the MN State Fairgrounds (see last photo), but this artist is unknown. Definitely Art Deco. 1st picture shows it in situ, 2nd picture shows it after removal. It is made of some sort of light weight composite material, but not plaster. It has a fine hairline running down the center of the piece that can be reinforced on the reverse side and a couple of small hunks missing on the edge. Professional restoration along with some light cleaning could be done to bring it back to perfection. It measures 68″w x 53″h and would be a grand addition to the lobby of a hotel or apartment building of that period. Let’s find it the perfect home!
